Armenian Court Orders Two-Month Pretrial Detention for Gagik Tsarukyan

An Armenian court ordered Prosperous Armenia leader and businessman Gagik Tsarukyan to be held in pretrial detention for two months following charges of large-scale fraud and money laundering.

The court decision followed Tsarukyan’s detention on July 6, when law-enforcement officers also carried out searches at his residence outside Yerevan and at a number of businesses associated with him.

According to Armenia’s Investigative Committee, Tsarukyan is accused of large-scale fraud and money laundering. His lawyers have rejected the accusations, describing the case against him as fabricated.

The proceedings come shortly after Armenia’s June 2026 parliamentary election, in which Prosperous Armenia narrowly failed to reach the 4% threshold required for representation in parliament.

The timing has increased political scrutiny surrounding the case. Tsarukyan was one of the prominent opposition figures involved in the election campaign, while the treatment of opposition candidates and activists had already emerged as an issue during the electoral period.

The wider political context is examined in our analysis of Armenia’s 2026 parliamentary election, including the dispute over Prosperous Armenia’s failure to enter parliament and broader concerns about the neutrality of state institutions.

The criminal proceedings against Tsarukyan remain ongoing. The charges have not resulted in a finding of guilt, and the allegations will ultimately have to be assessed through the judicial process.
